Why This Camp?
New Orleans is home to a vibrant and rich cultural heritage, yet many children grow up disconnected from their historical roots. “Making History” offers a unique opportunity to bridge that gap by making history fun, engaging, and accessible for young minds.
This camp immerses children in the history of their own city, exploring iconic landmarks and traditions that have shaped the culture of New Orleans. Through interactive learning and hands-on crafting, kids will gain a tangible connection to the past, creating crafts that reflect the rich heritage of their city. By blending education with creativity, we aim to foster both an appreciation for history and an excitement for learning.
Camp Highlights
- Immersive Learning: Campers will go on guided field trips to historical sites around New Orleans, from the Pharmacy Museum to Congo Square, gaining hands-on knowledge of the city’s diverse cultural history.
- Creative Expression: Each day, campers will participate in craft activities inspired by what they’ve learned, creating tangible mementos to take home. These activities include making herbal remedies, crafting ornaments, building musical instruments, and even making pralines.
- Cultural Heritage: By connecting to the historical landmarks and cultural practices of New Orleans, children will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of their cultural heritage.
- Time Machine Scrapbook: As a keepsake, each camper will co-create a “Time Machine” scrapbook filled with photos, recipes, and explanations of their journey, helping to preserve and reflect on their experiences.
Camp Structure
The camp is designed to balance educational field trips with creative craft sessions. Each day, campers will explore a different historical site, where they’ll engage in hands-on learning activities. Following the excursion, they’ll participate in a Maker’s Space activity, where they’ll create craft projects inspired by their visit. This structure allows children to absorb history in an interactive way while also fostering creativity and artistic expression.
Why Choose “Making History”?
This camp goes beyond traditional learning by giving children an opportunity to experience history firsthand. Through immersive field trips and fun craft-making sessions, campers will leave with not only new knowledge but also meaningful, handmade items that connect them to the past. More importantly, they will gain a sense of pride and ownership over their cultural heritage, instilling a love for history and creativity that can last a lifetime.
Join us for a week of fun, creativity, and discovery, and help your child craft their own piece of history!
